Music is fun. And learning to make music should be fun. Tickled Ivories is just that: fun music-making!
We offer piano lessons to children while they are in day care, after school care, or in summer camps at on-site locations. We are truly committed to "putting children in touch with music"! Lessons are 30-minutes in length and occur on the same day each week. Children are grouped in age appropriate classes and classes are kept small to allow our teachers the ability to work directly with your child. Tickled Ivories strives to make music lessons rewarding and enjoyable. Strict practice schedules are not outlined though as time progresses, we highly encourage our students to adopt a regular practice schedule.
The program is designed to teach children in small, peer groups. The social elements of group activities are strong motivators for children of all ages. The group provides reassurance, the opportunity to learn from others, and increased motivation for lessons. Students are encouraged and challenged by other group members.
A typical 30 minute class for a preschool student will include "hands-on" instruction, ear training, movement and rhythm practice, and theory instruction. Musical theory is reinforced through fun manipulatives such as "Play Dough", dry erase boards, flashcards, and musical games. School age students? Class time consists of "hands-on" instruction, musical theory, ear training, sight reading, ensemble playing, technique, rhythm drills and composition/
improvisation. All children in the group class are engaged in the learning process for the entire class time. Books are issued to students on their first class day. Preschool students do not typically take their books home. Practice pages are sent home periodically for at-home fun and review. School age students who have an instrument at home are encouraged to take their books home for practice and review. Books should always return on "piano day". While children are unique and progress at their own, individual pace, re-grouping of students is sometimes necessary. This is an important part of the learning process. Children should never be expected to achieve a goal that is unreasonable or would result in frustration. Nor should a child be bored in a learning environment that is not challenging and mentally stimulating.
Students are also given the opportunity to perform in an annual
recital. Parents are given advanced notification of the recital
date and time so the entire family can enjoy the abilities developed
by the child performing. Students are encouraged to participate
but participation is not mandatory.
